Description

The goal of the proposed work is improving manufacturing methods of complex curvature light control films (LCF) using the JSF F35 display visor as the development platform. The LCF utilizes AlphaMicron’s proprietary liquid crystal (LC) technology to provide electronically controlled dimming on demand. The same LC technology is used in the AlphaMicron’s MS-02 military eyewear product line. The proposed work is structured to meet the DAF goals of replacing the pilot’s mechanically operated static tinted lens with an active tinting lens which provides the pilot active control over tint levels. The highly curved, asymmetric shape of the F35 display visor presents unique technical challenges for LCF fabrication. Two material developments achieved during the Air Force Phase II STTR program directly addressed the challenges associated with this task. First was the development of a high transmission, thermoformable plastic films with a stretchable conductive layer. The second was the creation of a high-performance single layer light control film that expanded the tinting range of the LCF. TACFI funding will address the next step in the display visor LCF development path, improved fabrication methods to increase  LCF quality and throughput. A brief review of the core LC technology and   commercial applications for complex curvature light control films provides our introduction to the work plan.

Score Rationale

The AI/ML fit score is zero because this solicitation is purely a materials science and advanced manufacturing problem — liquid crystal films, thermoforming, conductive layers — with no AI/ML component whatsoever; 'AI-native startup' is entirely the wrong vehicle for this work. The pathway speed scores high (4) as TACFI is a legitimate fast-track instrument under AFWERX, but the award ceiling of $1.9M with a sequential Phase II structure earns only a mid-range transition score given the vague follow-on path to F-35 integration at scale.
