Description

AFWERX has approved Grid Raster’s STRATFI proposal for $4.3M to extend SBIR Phase II effort working with AFRL and Warner Robins Air Logistics Complex (WR-ALC). The scope of STRATFI effort is to research and develop an advanced AI-based dynamic extended reality (XR) platform for 3D digital twin creation, object detection, registration, localization, and visualization for a variety of use cases in manufacturing and sustainment such as painting, de-painting, sanding, defect detection, defect mapping, robotic repairs, 3D visualization and others in a constantly changing operational environment. The platform will provide an AI-assisted agile and intuitive end-to-end XR workflow with capabilities including: real-time creation and ingestion of digital twin data from various sources, spatial mapping of relevant information and metadata, dynamic process and data visualizations, multi-user and human-machine interaction, asset and serial number specific operational task assistance, with complete logs of operational data, tasks, and outcomes. These capabilities will allow dynamic, real time, precise, collaborative, contextual, and asset specific visualization and task guidance unlike current state of the art XR solutions rooted in inflexible pre-developed content. The development of proposed technology advancement can benefit many use cases in robotics, automation, and digital twin simulations and operations.

Score Rationale

This is a STRATFI award — the gold standard fast-track OT instrument — scoring maximum on pathway speed, and the AI/ML fit is genuinely strong: object detection, localization, defect mapping, and real-time digital twin creation are core AI-shaped problems with clear industrial computer vision and perception components tied to an identified end-user (WR-ALC). Problem framing is solid with named use cases and an existing Phase II baseline, though success metrics and data access details are not specified in the solicitation text. Award transition scores a 3 because at $4.3M it falls just under the $5M ceiling threshold and no explicit production pathway or follow-on contract vehicle is named beyond the STRATFI instrument itself.
