Description

Under this proposed STRATFI effort, Wilder Systems will continue the research, research & development, and research development test and evaluation (R/R&D/RDTE) effort from previous Phase II SBIR research. The primary Technical Objective is to refine the design concept to address the need for expeditionary robotic maintenance capability by ruggedizing, networking and proving out a series of increasingly complex maintenance tasks in the expeditionary environment. The second technical objective is to validate and prove system performance metrics are satisfactory to meet target system cycle times, process quality, improve operator hazard and ergonomic conditions, and overall value proposition. Demonstration of the new capabilities will take place at Wilder Systems’ facility in Austin, TX, followed by full scale testing at a suitable Global Strike Command (GSC) location or Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (AMARG).

Score Rationale

The AFWERX STRATFI pathway and $18M ceiling with a clear Phase II lineage earn top marks on speed and award size, with an explicit GSC/AMARG transition demonstration site named. However, the core problem is robotic maintenance ruggedization and physical task execution in expeditionary environments — AI/ML may be embedded in perception or task planning, but the solicitation frames this primarily as a hardware/systems engineering and environmental hardening effort, not a genuinely AI-shaped problem. Problem framing is reasonable but lacks explicit success metrics, cycle-time targets, or data availability language, keeping it at a middling score.
